Not long ago, our humble abode of a hotel received a nice review on TripAdvisor. It was a somewhat bittersweet experience, as what for some is a gem for others might be a perfect opportunity to find every tiny crack in that gem. I remember that blog of yours describing in a scientific 😉 way all sorts of travelers, from hidden-gem’ers to hotel-haters. I have seen people documenting their stays in the hotels, posting on TripAdvisor pictures (a doorknob or a crack under a window ) and even videos ( one was showing water draining in the tub). And that is all right – you cannot control what guests put on websites, what you can control is how you respond to and how you deal with guest input, both at the front desk and on the Internet. That is where the devil is hidden… Common sense and good training help to overcome any difficulties/anxieties one may have/find in the guest-hotel relationship.
I am not a sailor so I was a little reluctant to go but when the trip was over I wished I had booked 10 days or a month. We swam in sheltered coves in incredibly clear sea and sailed into ports in the late afternoon for dinner and entertainment. If you like a particular island you stay longer or even return to it. The captain doubles as a guide/host and knows the best restaurants, bars, beaches and is your private interpreter making ordering in restaurants easy. The surprising thing is that it can actually be cheaper then staying in a hotel and a lot more interesting! The authentic way to sail the Greek islands with Captain Alex and his comfortable traditional wooden sailing yachts on the Aegean and the Ionian Seas. Rent a cabin or the entire boat for you and your family and friends. These beautiful boats are large enough to accommodate 16 passengers comfortably and offer several itineraries that will allow you to visit the different island chains when they each have the best weather.
Note: Expedia Group also owns Hotwire, which I didn’t find quite as reliable as the other three in my tests. For one itinerary, a nonstop flight that the other sites offered was not available when booking a Hotwire package (though it was available when booking a separate flight on Hotwire), and the pricing on some searches was a little higher than on the other sites. Like Expedia and its partners, Priceline also offers every possible combination of flight, hotel, and rental car. Its search results pages are easy to navigate, with plenty of filter and sort options, plus a map view for hotels. Priceline offers numerous hotel options in popular vacation destinations at every price point. One quirk to prepare for: Priceline’s flight result page lists departure and return flights together as a pair rather than letting you choose each one separately. This cuts down on the number of screens you have to click through but could mean extra scrolling while you try to find the exact two flights you want.
I was served a whole chicken instead! Main courses are often grilled. It’s typical to match grilled meat (chicken, lamb) with tzatziki or other yoghurt based dip. Albanian kitchen favors oven cooked dishes such as moussaka, pastichio and lasagne – many dishes are based on Italian and Greek cuisine. Stuffed peppers and tomatoes are also common. Many restaurants serve pizza that is prepared in a stone oven. It’s rare to see a specifically vegetarian section in a menu. The menus always had many vegetarian options, though. Some restaurants prepare vegetarian alternatives of e.g. moussakas. Common starters include white cheese (prepared in various ways), olives and grilled vegetables. Most restaurants have a nice selection of fresh seafood. Seafood prices vary a lot. Rarest catches can be relatively expensive, up to 4000 lek. Being allergic to seafood, I can’t say much of the taste. If you want to enjoy seafood, try Taverna Lefteri. It’s the oldest restaurant in Himarë, and has the best reviews.
