The rooms are stylish and spacious, and comfortably appointed with luxurious furnishings which allowed me to perch my head for a wonderful night’s sleep. The amenities in the hotel include a fitness centre, 7,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and an ultra sleek bar and lounge serving tapas called Vbar. There is also Citrus, the hotel’s in-house restaurant which serves an eclectic menu with a Texan flair. Offerings at Citrus included inventive creations such as foie gras “mille crepe” ($18), a foie gras terrine layered with slices of crepe and served with compressed strawberries, celery and banana. It was an unusual combination – a dish that shouldn’t have worked – but somehow the strawberries came together well with the foie gras as they weren’t too sweet. The banana was however at odds with the foie gras, but nevertheless this was an interesting dish to try. There were also a variety of salads including a baby heirloom tomato salad with burrata ($11) which was lovely.

You’ll find drastically different speeds at hotels in the same city. In Washington, D.C., for example, the site claims that the Holiday Inn near the White House has astonishing speeds – 103.5 Mbps download and 20.3 mbps upload. The Capitol Skyline, on the other hand, has a mere 0.1 Mbps download and 0.6 Mbps upload. In other words, essentially no Wi-Fi. Note that the site doesn’t cover every city, so if you’re going a bit off the beaten path, you may not be able to get Wi-Fi details ahead of time. And you may want to click the Advanced search link on the front page instead of using the basic search, because it includes a drop-down list of all cities it covers, and lets you filter the results in many ways, including by maximum and minimum price. If you download the iOS or Android app, there are additional features. If you’re at a hotel, you can use the app to measure its Wi-Fi speed.

On July 3, 1941, a little more than a week after the Nazi German invasion of the Soviet Union during World War II, Joseph Stalin spoke for the first time to the Soviet people about the progress of the war. He called the citizens of his nation “brothers and sisters,” a term he had never used before. It was an intimacy born of the terrible crisis they shared. Stalin admitted that the enemy had succeeded in breaking through, and he urged his compatriots to annihilate the intruders with every means possible. The Soviet people were urged to rouse themselves for what was to become the largest military contest of all time. The Axis assault on June 22, 1941, had caught Soviet forces almost entirely unprepared. Finnish armies in the north, Romanian armies in the south, and a 3-million strong Nazi German force between them drove forward at a relentless pace, encircling whole Soviet armies.
